For Methenamine to work properly as an antibacterial, the urine needs to be somewhat acidic (low pH). Methenamine is converted to an antibacterial in the urine when the pH is in the lower end of the spectrum and more acidic. The antibacterial is then activated and is toxic to the bacteria and slows their growth.
